Seniors - Warnings and Drug Interactions

Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines provide safe and effective relief when used as directed. But, as with all medications, it is important that you make your doctor to be aware of what medicines—both prescription and OTC—you are taking to prevent drug interactions or any potential side effects.

Being aware of all the medications you are taking is especially important for seniors, who often take multiple OTC medicines in a given month, in addition to an average of three prescription medicines. Remember, never take more than one medicine with the same active ingredient, unless told to do so by a healthcare professional.

Here are a few steps everyone should consider to ensure safe use of OTC medicines:

Tip 1: Always read and follow the Drug Facts label.

Tip 2: Never take more than one medicine with the same active ingredient unless specifically told to do so by your doctor.

Tip 3: Choose products that treat only the symptoms you have so you take only those active ingredients you need.

Tip 4: Talk to your doctor if taking an OTC medicine becomes more than a temporary practice or if your symptoms do not go away.

Tip 5: Create a list of all the medicines you take and share it with your healthcare professional(s).

Tip 6: Tell your healthcare professional(s) about your full medical history and eating habits.

Tip 7: Bring any questions you have to a healthcare professional, such as a doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

If you are taking prescription medications or multiple OTC medications, consult a healthcare professional to get information about any potential interactions between your prescriptions and OTC medicines.
